Laur @ 10:52 PM

listening to Absolutely Zero by Jason Mraz

...a bit of a shock, really. I had
an idea.

Some people think better at night, but
I've begun to see
that I don't think
at all.

Laur @ 10:43 PM

listening to Don't Speak by No Doubt

Oh Mary, what can I tell
you?
We are princesses of words, you and I, but
I dropped my crown
when you said:
"Like you, Lauren. You have such
clear and
beautiful
skin."

Because Mary,
what do you say
to that gorgeous girl
who always has a smile to spare you and
made you feel
like a true poetess?

It isn't true, Mary.
My skin,
it's just another illusion.
You are better
than you think. And someday
I will give you
a revised version of
this poem.

And you will believe me.

Open your eyes, she told him
telepathically; it was
her longing
that brought life
to the lyrics they shared
night after night

and it was his blindness
that called her "friend"

when she was so much
could be so much

more.

Laur @ 10:50 PM

listening to Dave Matthews Band

She listened
to Franz Ferdinand and opened her mind
to recklessness.

Eleven o'clock on a school night. She
took a chance
and left her homework
undone.
Fantasies of miracles, the
grace
of simply slipping by unnoticed
with a smile-- the pretty girls
had fairy godmothers of convenience
who kept their hair brushed,
their jeans snug,
and their sleeves dry without sweat;
would her fairy godmother save her
from her homework
and the deadline
she ignored?

Laur @ 11:11 PM

listening to nothing

It made sense yesterday. The way
you breathed heavily, letting out a
quiet sigh
whenever you looked at me.
And the way you said
hello
to me-- not just "hello," but
"hello Lauren."
Yet today you stood beside me
so silently
that I knew your eyes were
preoccupied, and now I
assume
it is the same with
your thoughts
and
your heart.
